Fee: $20.00 includes free entry to Tularosa Basin Museum
Origins and Purpose
Hosted by AlamogordoTownNews.org and led by historian and local journalist, Chris Edwards. The tour now in its 4th year was created to spotlight the rich cultural history of Alamogordo’s New York Avenue Cultural Arts and History District. It’s part of a broader effort to tell the stories of downtown New York Avenue blocks 900 to 1200 and beyond, and to celebrate the city’s unique identity, which—despite its Southwestern location—has deep Northeastern roots due to its founding by railroad entrepreneurs during New Mexico’s territorial era. Stories include tails of horse wranglers, railroad barons, and bankers and more who shaped the district.
The Walking Tour lasts about 3 to 4 hours depending upon participant engagement on a flat walk that encompasses a 5 block radius of downtown.
Participants are guided through historic buildings and sites, with stories that span:
• Old brothels and saloons from Alamogordo’s early days.
• Behind-the-scenes access to landmarks like the Flickinger Center, the Otero Arts and more
• Ghost stories told by Ms. Alice at Victoria 913, adding a spooky twist to the historical narrative.
• A docent-led tour of the Tularosa Basin Museum of History
